‘There is no shred of evidence’ - Mahlobo rubbishes claims he bribed judges

Former state security minister David Mahlobo has described the testimony of two state security agents, who have implicated him in the looting of intelligence fund, as a work of fiction.

Mahlobo appeared before the commission of inquiry into state capture on Friday.

In January, several witnesses who are employed by the State Security Agency (SSA). whose identities were protected due to the nature of the work, placed Mahlobo at the center of corruption at the agency.

They alleged Mahlobo instructed agents to deliver large amounts of cash to him personally. The money was meant to be used as bribes for judges and for former president Jacob Zuma.

One agent said he personally delivered R1.4 million in cash to Mahlobo's home.

"The things that have been said here to implicate me by all these individuals are incorrect. They don't even have a shred of evidence, chair, to demonstrate that. All of them told you, its hearsay. After they spoke for an entire day, they told you they don't have evidence.

"There is no evidence. I am not a lawyer I am just a pure scientist, but I also know intelligence. I also deal with facts not fiction, they never gave you evidence. They say I took money, if someone takes money there should be paper trail but my signature is not there," said Mahlobo

He added that the commission was dealing with “political animals” who are using the commission to fight political battles and frame judges.

Mahlobo said an affidavit by a witness known as Steven alleges that he introduced him to judges, but he is not able to confirm the judges’ names.

"This character called Steven is the one working on a false alert to implicate a judge as if judges are being bought. They are bringing the profession into disrepute.”

Mahlobo and his legal team also alleged that there is someone at the commission who has hidden an affidavit by another witness, referred to as Dorothy, who exonerated him.

Evidence leader Paul Pretorius rejected the allegations, saying the commission only heard of the existence of such a document but have not seen it.

"We spoke to Dorothy this morning who denied that such an affidavit was ever attested to by her and if such an affidavit exists it must be brought to us and we will investigate it. But we know of no such an affidavit and we certainly haven't concealed any such information and would never do so," said Pretorius.

Mahlobo denied that he lied to the commission and said his legal team has a copy of it.

The commission has requested a copy.
