The entire N3 highway has had to be closed off during the course of Friday night and Saturday morning in the wake of violent protest action at the Mooi plaza.

The N3 Toll Concession said on Twitter this was after trucks were set on fire, with reports received of gunshots and stone-throwing.

"Law enforcement and emergency services are on (the) scene," they said.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area."

Scattered protests erupted in the early hours of Friday morning and are believed to be in response to the incarceration of former president Jacob Zuma.

The N2, N3, and the N7 in the province were blocked off by angry protesters, resulting in commuters not being able to get to work on time.

Premier Sihle Zikalala has called for calm while admitting that KZN finds itself in an unique situation.

A multidisciplinary provincial security plan has since been developed in an attempt to quell tensions in the province.

On Friday, the Pietermaritzburg High Court dismissed Zuma's application to stay his arrest.

Zuma is currently at the Escort Correctional Centre in KwaZulu-Natal where he is serving his sentence for refusing to cooperate with the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture.
