Eskom’s acting CEO and chairperson says they never issued a guarantee that there would be no load shedding in October and September this year.

Jabu Mabuza briefed the media on the latest round of power cuts at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday evening.

The embattled power utility, which implemented Stage 2 rolling blackouts on Wednesday and Thursday, says Stage 1 load shedding will be implemented on Friday.

Mabuza was responding to reports that Eskom supposedly issued a guarantee in September South Africa would not see rolling blackouts in that month or October.

According to Mabuza, "We can never say there will be no load shedding.”

He explains: “We go out of our way to make the point that whilst no load shedding can be guaranteed, our efforts [are] to ensure that it is eliminated and if it has to be done it must be done at the shallowest level."

Eskom says it hopes there will no more load shedding for the foreseeable future, but it cannot guarantee this.

Mabuza says, at best, Eskom aims to not have unplanned outages and that they are working towards illuminating load shedding in the future.
