We need to ask bigger questions, UCT VC tells students

University of Cape Town vice-chancellor Mamokgethi Phakeng has questioned how a person with a criminal record ends up being hired by a state-owned entity.
Phakeng was speaking outside Parliament where thousands of UCT students were protesting the murder of student Uyinene Mrwetyane.
The 19-year-old, who was missing for two weekend, was murdered by a post office employee in Claremont.
The suspect, who cannot be named, was arrested on August 30 and is facing charges of murder, rape and defeating the ends of justice.
He appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates Court on Monday.

Phakeng said conversations around the security in public spaces need to be tightened or students will continue to be killed.
"If someone get murdered in the post office, in a public place, that means the streets are even worse.
"We need to be asking bigger questions. How does someone with a criminal record get hired in a post office? Because it doesn't matter, even if we improve security on campus, if the security in our streets and public places are not what they are then we will continue to lose women students."
