Wits students to hold General Assembly

Protesting Wits students on Friday said they will hold a General Assembly with or without university management, after Wits postponed the historic gathering.

Vice-Chancellor Adam Habib addressed the media this morning, saying the assembly was postponed after no agreement could be reached with students.

Students and workers who are protesting for free higher education gathered in the tent where the General Assembly was scheduled to take place.

Former Wits SRC President Mcebo Dlamini said Habib is to blame for the postponement.

"He wanted us to talk about Monday and not talk about today and the issues that are happening now, so we couldn't find each other. The reason he cancelled this thing is because he does not want to commit to anything. He wants to be a celebrity on TV and be seen as Jesus Christ," Dlamini said.

Habib earlier told the media he was willing to negotiate with students.

"You want the glare of the world's media, but that is not an engagement. We are not into the politics of spectacle. We have to understand that higher education is in a crisis," Habib said.

Wits students and academics have voiced their disappointment following Habib's announcement.
