'Load shedding is protecting us from a national blackout' - Eskom representative
Updated | By Breakfast with Martin Bester
Robert Koch, senior manager of Enterprise Risk and Resilience at Eskom, joined Breakfast with Martin Bester to answer your questions.
Over the past few months, lots has been said by energy experts and listeners about Eskom. However, we still do not have the raw facts about the problems we and Eskom are facing.
With that in mind, Breakfast with Martin Bester decided to invite Eskom's Robeth Koch to respond to energy expert Ted Blom's allegations.
Since 2008, South Africa has been running out of coal. "Who buys the bad coal?" Martin Bester asked.
Robert Koch replied: "We have specific specifications. There has been quite a lot of movements within Eskom. People are held accountable. My team addresses the bigger problem. Every time we do load shedding, we are protecting ourselves from a complete blackout."

Martin Bester also wanted to know how many bad appointments have been made over the years and whether they have been replaced with new people making better decisions?
"I am not going to answer that question because it is not the area of my expertise," Koch responded.
One of the big concerns for many South Africans is whether we will have power for the coming winter months. Robert mentioned that there is a team who will only focus on winter. He also said that he is confident that there are plans in place for load shedding.
