It might have been the brightest movie of the year, but apparently it wasn't the best...

If you were to look back on 2023, there are very few things within the entertainment industry that captured the attention of thousands in the way the 'Barbenheimer' craze did.

For weeks and months, everything seemed to be about the two biggest movies of the year.

There seemed to be pink everywhere and history fans were ecstatic about witnessing a Christopher Nolan film featuring atomic bombs.

But it turns out that just because these films received the most hype in 2023, doesn't mean they were the best.

The British Film Institute has officially released its list of the 50 best movies for 2023 and while there are some heavy hitters mentioned, there are a few that might have slipped by under the radar that you will definitely be adding to your must-watch list.

Here is a list of the top 10 movies for 2023:

10. 'May December'

"Twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, a married couple buckles under pressure when an actress arrives to do research for a film about their past." - IMDb

The story is loosely based on the story of Mary Kay Letourneau.

9. 'Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World'

"An overworked and underpaid production assistant has to shoot a workplace safety video commissioned by a multinational company. But an interviewee makes a statement that forces him to re-invent his story to suit the company's narrative." - IMDb

8. 'Anatomy of a Fall'

7. 'Passages'

5. 'Barbie' & 'Oppenheimer'

There wasn't a counting error; it was just too hard to determine the better of the two epic films so they settled for a tie.

This film sees director Martin Scorsese team up with his favourite, and frequent collaborators, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.
