Farm owners must stop killing our people: Ramaphosa
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned the murders on farms in South Africa.
Ramaphosa is answering questions in the National Council of Provinces.
He says: "We condemn the farm killings that continue to take place in our country, because we can never justify any form of taking of life. The farm killings must be brought to an end."
The deputy president also used the opportunity to speak out against the presence of the old South African flag at the #BlackMonday protests.
"That should be condemned. Anybody who still hoists a flag that is representative of a terrible crime that was committed against our people, what the world called a crime against humanity, should be condemned very strongly.
"I am hoping that that flag will never be flown in South Africa ever again," he told MPs.
He says the presence of the old flag does little to further the valid cause of farmers and farmworkers.
Ramaphosa also pleaded with farmers to stop exploiting their workers.
He says the rights of farm owners cannot be in violation of the basic rights of farmworkers.
Thousands of South Africans wore black on Monday to raise awareness about the plight of farmers, who they say are under increasing attack.
An elderly man was brutally killed on his farm while the thousands took to the streets.
