According to spokesperson Robert Mulaudz the boy was swept away by a flash flood along Elias Motsoaledi Road in Dobsonville after playing by an open trench.

"We conducted our search until around midnight," Mulaudzi says.

He adds that they have called in a specialised unit to continue the search for the boy and that his parents are receiving counselling.

"We don't have the exact details of what happened leading to the boy falling into the trench but we are talking to the boy's family," Mulaudzi says.

Flash floods struck parts of Johannesburg due to a slow-moving storm that moved across Gauteng.

Mulaudzi says although the roads seem to have been cleared, people should avoid low water bridges and crossing water streams and trenches as the strength of water is often misjudged.

"Parents should also make sure they know where their children are at all times," he says.
