Friends and family pay tribute to Karabo Mokoena
Updated | By Silindelo Masikane
Friends and family of the slain Karabo Mokoena have described her as someone who was beautiful "both inside and out".
Mokoena's memorial service was held in Diepkloof on Thursday. The 22-year-old's body was found burnt in a veld in Lyndhurst, north east of Johannesburg last month.
Mokoena's boyfriend Sandile Mantsoe has been charged with her murder, and is expected to apply for bail next week.
Karabo's friend Neo says she often complained about finding herself in an abusive relationship.
"She said to me 'Neo, I am a living testament that there is a God. He tried to finish me and look at me now, I am still standing'," Neo said.
She said the last time she spoke to Karabo, her friend said she saw her ex-boyfriend.
"She just said...my friend....eish. And she hung up," Neo said.
Karabo's uncle Tshepo says his niece's death has shone a spotlight on gender-based violence.
"This whole thing of raising boys and teaching them that it is wrong to raise your hand for a woman. You must respect woman."
