This after Sitole was reportedly hauled over the coals by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) for allegedly failing to cooperate in an investigation into the murder of Cape Town's top cop Charl Kinnear.

Kinnear was gunned down in his car in front of his home in September 2020.

The 52-year-old, who was an Anti-Gang Unit section commander, investigated several high-profile cases in the Western Cape.

Sitole’s office responded to the allegations in a media statement on Thursday.

“On the contrary, the National Commissioner had referred an investigation associated with the murder of Lieutenant Colonel Charl Kinnear to Ipid for their investigation,” said national police spokesperson, Vish Naidoo.

“The National Commissioner is therefore perturbed by allegations that a criminal case has been opened against him for having ‘failed to cooperate with the investigation’ which he had initiated as a ‘complainant’.

Naidoo added Sitole was yet to be briefed on the matter.

“The National Commissioner has not been appraised of the nature and extent of the allegations imputing his lack of cooperation with Ipid and will in due course after he would have been provided with the complaint from Ipid, if any, respond to same fully.”

It’s not the first time Sitole has been in hot water.

Last year October, President Cyril Ramaphosa launched an inquiry to probe Sitole's fitness to hold office after the police watchdog accused him of failing to cooperate in a separate matter.
