Tourist ponders: Why is toilet paper locked up in South Africa?

"Why is the toilet paper in jail?"

Toilet paper is becoming more and more of a luxury for many people, given the price.

And it's not even about the quality, just having toilet paper is a big deal.

If you can afford 2-ply toilet paper, then consider yourself living a good life.

This was made apparent to us when we saw a post shared by a person visiting from New Zealand.

Of all the questions that a person could ask about South Africa, and there are many, the New Zealander asked everyone on Reddit

"Visiting here from NZ, and I have just one question. Why is the toilet paper in jail/who’s stealing the rolls?"

The reaction from South Africans was diverse, as you might imagine.

  • "Once my mother made a cup of tea and someone stole the sugar out of it… Durban is dangerous"
  • "Unfortunately, even with the lock the toilet paper will still be (rolled down and) stolen. Have you seen the dispensers that gives you a single square per pull? We had those at my last place of work."
  • "Yes, we will steal literally anything if it is not locked down"
